Description
Groundbreaking in its positive portrayal of a sex-working mother, How Mamas Care opens up a conversation to question the assumption that certain types of work make parents "unfit" and vulnerable to the loss of their children to the state. It furthers the conversation begun by earlier feminist children's books about working mothers and non-traditional family arrangements. Essential to progressive parenting collections, distinctive art and an accessible story demonstrates the many practical, material forms of maternal love. Juniper Fitzgerald's writing comes from realizing there were no books addressing the particular stigma she faces as a former sex worker and mother. For more than a decade, she has worked as a sex worker and contributed to sex workers' rights advocacy; her PhD also focused on these issues. Her writing has been published on Jezebel, Tits and Sass, and MUTHA. She is active in several sex workers' rights organizations such as The Red Umbrella Project and SWOP. Illustrator Elise Peterson's work and words have been featured in publications such as New York Magazine, Nylon, Elle, and Lenny Letter; she speaks often on the impact of her experience with sex work on her art and advocacy.
